Is AMD out of steam for 2007?

I got to admit that the last two quarters were not so hot for AMD. Q1 2007 seems it is going to disappoint for sure but by how much? What I can read from Hector's comments in March, a month ealrier than when he should, that it is going to be probably the worst quarter for the last 3 years.

The most disturbing problem is in the incosistency of what AMD had said and what they had not say. They said that Barcelona is due Q2 07 but they did not show anything meaningful, yet. I mean, Q2 starts next month. They said it will be 40% better in performance than clovertown but they also said no meaningful impact till Q1 2008.

If this is not confusing to investors, I do not know what is? Sadlym it idicates tough times are coming AMD's way!

Just look at AMD's stock over the past year.

Barcelona will be a dud as well - who's going to use it? Servers are better off with Opterons, and desktop users aren't going to buy something so expensive as Barcelona will probably be.

It's game over for AMD, really. Unfortunate since we need healthy competition, but AMD isn't making any right moves any more. We can expect Hector to say Adios sometime shortly after Barcelona debuts.

The more focused a company is on their core competency, the better they are. You know, it took Toyota very many years to be the # 2 in the US and they used every opportunity they got to expand their share. And they are on their way to become number 1.

In the 70s, people considered Japanese cars were made for poor people. 1978 proved them wrong as people's priorities changed from luxary to gas economy. Toyota surely used that to their advantage. Then, people realized quality and fall in love with even more with Toyota. Years after that, Toyota introduced luxary cars and defeated the Cadillacs and Mercedeses.

It took Toyota more than 40 years to be what it is now. It did not compete on every platform all at once. AMD needs to learn that lesson.

One more thing, the faster you go up, the faster you go down. You can fight an army with another army but you will loose if you are weaker. You could win by being selective. AMD needs to use gurrella war fare.. But who is listening!
